The Olympic brand is rooted in ancient history, stretching all the way back to the Games in Antiquity, which were first held in the 8th century BC.
Inspired by the spirit and traditions of these Games, Pierre de Coubertin led their revival at the end of the 19th century, and these ancient origins still underpin the Olympic Games and the Olympic brand today.
Our ancient roots
The Olympic Movement is inspired by the Games in Antiquity, which were held every four years in Olympia, Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD, and brought people together in a celebration of sport and human achievement.
These values of unity in diversity and the joy of effort are still relevant today, underpinning the essence of the Olympic brand.
As the birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia (Greece) is a very important location for the Olympic Movement.
To this day, the Olympic flame is still lit in Olympia before each edition of the Olympic Games, with this and other symbolic elements helping to give the Olympic brand its unique identity.

Pierre de Coubertin
As well as reviving the Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin was the founding father of Olympism, and was passionate about combining sport and education to bring people together and make the world a better place. His ideals now form the foundation of the Olympic brand.
The first edition of the modern Olympic Games brought Olympism to life, uniting athletes from different backgrounds and countries in a celebration of sport and culture.
From this tangible demonstration of Olympism to the medals, anthem and ceremonies, Athens 1896 was the birthplace of the Olympic brand.
